SCIENCE of READING: Instructional Practices in Reading (60 Hours, includes reflections)

Mastery of instructional practices in reading provides teachers with the necessary tools to deliver high-quality instruction. New research on the Science of Reading (SoR) is shaping how schools are approaching literacy education. Emphasis on explicit and systematic teaching methods is now a core aspect of teaching students to read. By understanding these methodologies and strategies, teachers create engaging and effective lessons that cater to the diverse needs of all students. Proficiency in reading is also foundational to academic success across all subjects. When teachers hone their evidence-based structured literacy practices, they can better support students in developing essential literacy skills, which are fundamental for comprehension, critical thinking, and communication.

Through interactive sessions, quizzes, and research-driven exploration, this course empowers educators with practical strategies and tools tailored to enhance literacy instruction. From diving into teaching methodologies to crafting aids and activities, participants will develop their skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating effective instructional strategies.

This course includes an assignment workbook that helps you prepare to implement new strategies with students. It guides you in completing writing/research/reflection assignments, planning implementation in your classroom (you do not need to be currently teaching or working with students) and practicing techniques introduced in the course. The process is designed to help you learn as you work through these tasks. For example, you might prepare sample teaching materials. For more details, please take a look at the course outline in the course information sheet. You will find all the assignments and tasks listed there.

  • I wish I would have taken this course years ago. I learned so much and plan to implement the new ideas in the coming year. The first change that I plan to make is to make my classroom more active. This will be my 29th year teaching. I have always taught in the traditional manner. This course has changed my entire way of thinking. I have also learned numerous strategies that I could use in my classroom for teaching biology. Since taking this course, I understand that vocabulary is the foundation for learning the content.
