How do I keep and renew a teaching certificate in South Carolina?
Educators may complete academic credit-bearing coursework through a Regionally Accredited Institute of Higher Education for renewal credit. All university CEUs and semester graduate credit courses on RenewaTeachingLicense.com are regionally accredited.
In order to meet renewal requirements, teachers in SC must earn a minimum of 120 renewal credits.
- 1 semester hour = 20 renewal credits
- 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) = 10 hours = 10 renewal credits
Here is the South Carolina Department of Education Renewal Matrix. CEUs through a regionally accredited university may be entered under options 6 and 10. Courses must support the educator’s professional growth and development plan.
How do I earn a Read to Succeed R2S Literacy Teacher Endorsement in South Carolina?
Professional Learning Board is an approved Read to Succeed R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement provider.
Pursuant to the R2S Act and State Board of Education guidelines, the R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement is required of educators who have advanced to a Professional certificate and are certified in the following fields:
- Early Childhood Education
- Elementary Education
- English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- Special Education
- Montessori Education (Early Childhood and Elementary Levels)
Educators in these certification fields have two renewal cycles (i.e., ten years) to earn the R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement. Earning the R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement requires completion of four college courses or equivalent professional development approved by the SCDE. These courses include the following:
Once educators have completed all four courses, they should submit a request through My SC Educator Portal to add the R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement and then upload the professional development certificates or request an official transcript from the college or university.

According to the SC Department of Education, eligible coursework to renew a teaching certificate in SC must:
- Relate to the educator’s current field(s) of certification;
- Meet requirements for adding another field to the educator’s certificate; or
- Relate to the topics of technology, curriculum design, or instructional practices.
