How do I keep and renew a teaching certificate in South Carolina?
Teachers in SC get pre-approval from your employing South Carolina Public School District or renewal entity to use online renewal credit courses to renew a teaching certificate in SC. Educators holding a South Carolina Department of Education issued professional certificate are only eligible to receive renewal credit for professional development activities at the approval of their employing South Carolina public school district or renewal entity.
What state requirements does a teacher in SC need to meet for renewal?
According to the SC Department of Education, South Carolina professional training must:
- Relate to the educator’s professional development plan, area(s) of certification, and/or the employing educational entity’s plan;
- Be recognized as having professional relevance to the educational setting;and
- Be successfully completed.
In order to meet renewal requirements, teachers in SC must earn:
- a minimum of 120 renewal credits
- 10 renewal credits = 10 hours of direct participation
For any educator who has not earned a Master’s degree at least 60 of the required 120 renewal credits (equivalent to three semester hours) in graduate-level coursework through a regionally accredited university with an official transcript in order to renew their certificate.
