How do I renew a teaching certificate in MI?
Teachers renew their Michigan teaching certificate through the online MOECS renewal portal.
Teaching certificates are valid for 5 years and expire June 30. Certificates are able to be renewed beginning January 1 of the year they expire or, once requirements are met, progressed at any time to a more advanced certificate. Certificates have the same renewal and progression requirements regardless of if they are valid or expired.

Professional learning should be relevant and meaningful, and completed with ethical professionalism. The key factors for ensuring professional learning opportunities will count towards certificate renewal or progression are:
- must be appropriate to grade level and content areas of certification and endorsement; and
- must be completed since the issue date of the most recent certificate.
Teachers and school administrators, as well as school psychologists, renewing a license or certificate must complete 150 hours of education related professional learning:
- 6 college semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university
1 semester credit hour = 25 education-related professional learning hours - District Provided Professional Development (DPPD) hours
1 DPPD hour = 1 professional learning hour
As of July 1, 2020, when districts choose to allow DPPD to be used for recertification, they must enter it into the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) as State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs). This process replaces individual educator entry and the requirement for districts to review and sign each educator’s individual DPPD form.
