Professional Learning Board is an approved Professional Development provider of Professional Development Units (formerly Renewal Units) renewal units for teachers in Montana.
Important information about deadlines to renew a license from the Montana Office of Public Instruction with details on licensure renewal requirements:
- Teachers can apply for renewal any time after January 1 of the year your license expires.
- Although your license expires on June 30, you have until August 31 to complete the professional development (renewal units) or coursework necessary to renew your license.
- Check with your school about deadlines for providing proof of renewal of your license.
- Teachers not teaching in a school have up to one year to submit renewal materials (as long as requirements were completed during the term of your licensure).
What state requirements does a teacher in Montana need to meet for license renewal?

1 semester college credit = 15 OPI renewal units.
Class 1 License Renewal:
60 OPI renewal units or any combination of OPI professional development (renewal units) and semester college credits.
Class 2 License Renewal:
60 OPI renewal units or any combination of OPI professional development (renewal units) and semester college credits.
Class 3 License Renewal:
60 OPI renewal units or any combination of OPI professional development (renewal units) and semester college credits.
Class 4 License Renewal:
Class 4A, 4B, and 4C licenses: 60 OPI renewal units or any combination of OPI professional development (renewal units) and semester college credits. The first renewal must show evidence of renewal units earned in the following content areas: Curriculum and instruction in career and technical education; and safety and teacher liability.
Other professional development appropriate to renew a Class 4B or 4C license include: learning styles/teaching styles; including serving students with special needs; safety and teacher liability; classroom management; and teaching methods.
Class 5 License Renewal:
Cannot be renewed. This license either expires or converts to full licensure if the requirements have been completed.
Class 6 License Renewal:
60 OPI renewal units or any combination of OPI renewal units semester college credits.
