Teachers use online professional development and continuing education courses to renew a teaching certificate in SD. 15 contact (clock) hours is equivalent to one renewal credit.
What state requirements does a teacher in SD need to meet for renewal?
All Professional Learning Board courses include a free PD Tracker.
According to the SD Department of Education, South Dakota teachers renewing a Professional Teaching Certificate need to complete six education-related credits that must include a minimum of three transcripted credits. The remaining three credits shall include continuing education contact hours or transcripted credits. If you have a master’s degree or higher you may renew with any combination of six education-related credits, transcripted credits are not required.
Teachers in South Dakota who are renewing an Advanced Teaching Certificate or Education Specialist Certificate must complete six education-related transcripted credits or continuing education contact hours.
If all requirements for Professional Teaching Certificate, Advanced Teaching Certificate, or Education Specialist Certificate renewal have not been met by October 1 of the year of expiration, the certificate is invalid. Beginning December 1, 2020, to renew an invalid certificate the applicant must pay a penalty fee of $100 in addition to the application fee; however the renewal requirements remain the same.
Teachers in South Dakota who are renewing a Five-Year Educator Permit must complete three education-related transcripted credits or continuing education contact hours. To renew an invalid 5-Year Educator Permit, the applicant must complete six education-related credits, including any combination of transcripted credits or continuing education contact hours.
All teachers must have a minimum of one clock hour of an approved free suicide awareness and prevention training.
