How do I renew a teaching license in IA?
Get credit information for IA teaching license renewal here. The Board of Educational Examiners accepts official transcripts from regionally accredited universities.
Credits need to be earned after the issue date of the current license, or be no more than five years old if the license is expired. Your License Renewal Credits (LRCs) should be relevant to education or an endorsement area.
Beginning July 1, 2023, HF 672 eliminated renewal credit requirements for licensed educators who have completed a master’s degree or higher and have at least 10 years of licensed experience in education.

1 License Renewal Credit to renew a Substitute License (or 30 days of substitute teaching during the term of the license or one year of teaching experience).
2 License Renewal Credits to renew a Substitute Authorization.
4 License Renewal Credits (LRCs) to renew a Professional Service License (or 2 renewal credits if the applicant holds a doctor’s or specialist’s degree)
4 License Renewal Credits (LRCs) to renew a School Business Official Authorization.
3 License Renewal Credits to renew a Paraeducator Certification.
What state requirements does a Initial Career and Technical Education applicant in IA need to renew?
All applicants for an Initial Career and Technical Education authorization must complete these requirements during the 3 year term of their initial CTE authorization:
- Iowa approved Human Relations course
- Methods of teaching Career and Technical Education
- Curriculum design and construction
- Evaluation of programs and students. (also called Educational Psychology)
- Coursework in the instruction of Exceptional Learners
- Ethics Training

In 2019, HF 731 modified the requirements for mandatory reporter training for child and dependent adult abuse. The Iowa Department of Human Services offers a free online course to meet this state requirement.
