Course Description:

This course introduces teachers to STEM and student-centered learning to create and implement a standards-based curriculum. Teachers are guided to customize classroom instruction so that students develop the skills they need to survive in today's knowledge-based world. This includes learning to apply mathematical principles to everyday life through ideas, tools, and activities that teachers can use to make math interesting and fun for their students. The course helps teachers introduce the concept of student-centered learning in their classrooms. When students clearly understand their learning goals, and are able to work towards them, they are more self-motivated. Teachers are then able to customize and differentiate curriculum for each learner acting more as facilitators, coaches and mentors.

Objectives & Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Identify approaches to integrating STEM in the classroom.
  • Review own teaching strategies and areas of growth.
  • Distinguish between teacher-centered and student-centered approaches to learning.

Special Instructions:

After completing the course, you will be directed to the university for registration.
  • My administrator has been talking about integrating a STEM program at our school. I really wanted to learn more about it. This was very helpful!!
    Bonnie H.
  • Having the graphically organized examples of stands-based scope and sequence for the year, unit, and lesson is what I appreciated most from this course. Thanks
    Craig A.
  • This was convenient and easy to follow with new information to help me in my classroom. Thank you.
    Drew S.
  • Enjoyed this course and found some of my former thoughts on math problem solving to be incorrect. Found very interesting!
    Mary S.
  • This course offered new learning and reinforced and renewed prior learning. Many great activities and strategies to implement.
    Judith C.
  • This course opened my eyes to the importance of making sure math is not just a repetition of practicing problems but making sure it is relevant to the children's lives. Making math practical and relevant will change any negative stigmas children have about math.
    Jennifer A.
  • This course helped to enrich my understanding of meaningful classroom activities that address the eight standards for mathematical practice. I will continue to reassess my own teaching lessons, activities, and strategies to deepen the understanding and application of mathematical concepts of my students.
